Thursday morning, Japanese Prime Minister’s website was down followed by a twitter tweet from the anonymous twitter account. Japan tried to hide the fact that their website was down but it’s evident that they’ve been hacked. The attack was a warning for Japan’s pro-whale hunt stance, a practice that has been frown upon by many nations and may risk the extinction of the endangered whale species. Grass root groups Sea Shepherds have documented Japan’s cruel whaling vessels and even had a vessel destroyed in an encounter with one of those vessels.

Japan is active with the International Whaling Commission and has signed a moratorium to stop commercial whaling thirty years ago but has been meddling with the politics there to undo that agreement bribing smaller nations (with little success). Despite the ban on whaling, they still run whaling vessels disguised as “Research vessels” around the pacific ocean and the anarctic region.
A UN court report has stated that these “research vessels” have killed close to 1,000 whales a year and brought little research to the scientific community.
